The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has admonished President Mohammadu Buhari’s administration to sign the 2009 agreement made with the union as a necessity to end the ongoing strike.

ASUU gave this advice on Thursday, as the union has been on strike for about three months owing to the federal government’s inability to meet the demands of the 2009 ASUU/FG agreement among other reasons.

As the issues between the parties remain unresolved, the union advised President Buhari’s administration to sign the 2009 agreement for the sake of the youths of the country who will determine its future.

ASUU maintained that from the attitude of the President and members of his administration, they are not ready to assist the average children in receiving a quality education through sufficient funding and improvement of the welfare of lecturers.

The Chairman of ASUU, University of Ibadan Chapter, Professor Ayo Akinwole on Thursday said funding education was the best way to promote constructive development in the country.

He added that the government is indifferent to the number of out-of-school children in Nigeria.

“ASUU started the ongoing strike on February 14, 2022, to force the government to implement outstanding 2009 agreements on revitalization funding, earned academic allowances, the proliferation of universities, and sign a re-negotiated agreement with the Union.

“To fight to have a country and a future for the children of the poor from the traders of collective patrimony in government.

“If you fund education, the minds of the educated youths will be built to resist being used for criminality but since the government has been responsive, the funding war may become another opportunity where some people are making millions.

“They don’t care about the increasing number of out-of-school children and they are not concerned about what facilities Nigerian children are exposed to.

“For ASUU, a smarter way of controlling growing insecurity and redirecting the minds of Nigerian youths to constructive and developmental activities is to build their human capacity and minds through purposeful funding of education by federal, state, and local governments in Nigeria,” Adewole expressed.
